Designing

Founded by Jake Johnson, Otaku Pump was born from the fusion of anime passion and gym culture. Jake envisioned a brand that stood out in the crowded fitness supplement space—not only through its bold, anime-inspired identity but also with a digital presence that could match the energy of its pre-workout formulas.

When Jake came to us, he needed more than just a storefront. He needed a Shopify website that could capture the excitement of anime, engage fitness enthusiasts, and scale with demand—all while staying compliant in the supplement industry.

Working hand-in-hand with Jake, we designed a site that blends vibrant anime visuals with a high-performance, conversion-focused structure. From seamless product pages to SEO-driven copy and bold interactive elements, every aspect of the site was crafted to power growth and connect with a niche audience of lifters who want more than a typical fitness brand. The result? A unique online experience that not only reflects Otaku Pump’s personality but also drives sales in the competitive fitness industry.

Development

We structured Otaku Pump’s website development into three focused phases, each designed to build on the last and ensure long-term growth.

Phase 1 – Branding & Wireframe:

The foundation began with a full design sprint: creating wireframes, defining typography, selecting bold anime-inspired color palettes, and producing custom artwork and photography. This phase set the stage for a cohesive Shopify website that felt both premium and true to Otaku Pump’s anime-meets-fitness identity.

Phase 2 – SEO Enhancements

Next, we tackled visibility. Through keyword research, blog development, and on-page SEO improvements, we worked to position Otaku Pump for stronger rankings on Google and increased organic traffic. This phase ensured the brand could compete in the crowded fitness supplement market while building authority through targeted content.

Phase 3 – Optimizations & Analytics

The final phase, still in progress as of Aug. 23rd, 2025, focuses on refining performance. From installing and configuring advanced Shopify plugins to running heatmap analyses, we’re fine-tuning how users interact with the site. These optimizations will maximize conversions, improve usability, and provide data-driven insights to fuel continuous improvement.

Problems

Designing Otaku Pump’s website came with its own set of unique challenges. The biggest hurdle was striking the right balance between anime-inspired visuals and the bold, high-intensity world of gym supplements. While anime often leans into pastel colorways and softer tones, we needed to ensure the branding still carried the strength, energy, and edge that fitness enthusiasts expect—without drifting into a look that felt too playful or “girly” for the market.

Another challenge was visual production. Because we made a conscious decision not to use AI-generated artwork, all brand imagery had to be created in-house and on a budget. Capturing the right anime-meets-fitness aesthetic through photography and design required resourcefulness, creativity, and careful direction to ensure the site looked polished and professional while staying true to Jake’s vision.

Solutions

To solve the design challenge, we embraced pastel tones in a way that felt strong and intentional. By prioritizing deep blues accented with pastel pinks, we avoided the overly soft, washed-out look that can happen when white dominates the palette. The result was a color system that captured anime-inspired energy while maintaining the bold edge expected in the fitness industry.

For visuals, we leaned into a mix of graffiti-inspired artwork and authentic gym photography. This combination gave Otaku Pump a gritty, street-style aesthetic that tied seamlessly into the anime-meets-fitness concept—delivering a look that feels both original and true to the brand’s identity.

On the development side, we’ve worked closely with Jake to align the site’s functionality with his goals while keeping budget considerations front and center. From prioritizing must-have Shopify features to phasing in enhancements strategically, our process ensures Otaku Pump’s website continues to grow without sacrificing performance or design.
